President meets Volodymyr Yavorivsky

Victor Yushchenko has met with MP Volodymyr Yavorivsky, Chairman of the National Union of Ukrainian Writers, who also leads the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Culture.

They agreed that it is important to fairly and rationally use budget funds to resolve the most pressing problems of Ukraine’s culture.

Mr. Yavorivsky gave Mr. Yushchenko proposals formulated by his parliamentary committee. Its members believe that the Ukrainian government should involve foreign experts in translating Ukrainian books into the world’s most widely spoken languages. They hope it will help Ukrainian authors win international acclaim and receive prestigious prizes.

First Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk, Head of the NUUW Kyiv Office Viktor Baranov, author Anatoly Dimarov, and NUUW Council Secretary Anatoly Krym attended the meeting.

Highly respected Viktor Andriyovich! Ukrainian Association of book publishers and distributors addresses you with a question that needs your immediate personal intervention, because, as the experience shows, this problem can totally overcome your Decree “About some measures for development of book publishing business in Ukraine” (March 21, 2006) and lead to a serious crisis in one of the branches of publishing business – book trade, which is in very critical condition already.
